Artist Portraits: Gallery exhibition- Studio West Gallery
My 2023 London solo show-
Artist Portraits at Studio West Gallery, London. 2023
Brynley began his photography career in the music industry, shooting live events and album covers for clients like The Ministry of Sound and Bussey Building. When the pandemic halted live music events in 2020, he shifted focus and met artist Conor Murgatroyd in Peckham. Intrigued by Murgatroyd’s style, Brynley photographed him in his studio, sparking a project that would dominate his career for the next three years.
Since then, Brynley has traveled the UK photographing contemporary artists in their studios, building an unparalleled archive of the country’s emerging art scene. Rather than focusing on London, he intentionally explored less-charted areas, highlighting the diversity and multiculturalism within the creative community.
Through this project, Brynley has developed lasting relationships with many of the artists he has photographed, supporting their careers as they grow. Having not come from a Fine Art background, he has become an avid art collector, influenced by renowned portrait photographers like David Bailey.
This ongoing project captures a unique moment in the UK’s creative history, as the lockdowns provided many artists with the space for focused, uninterrupted work. As these artists rise to prominence, Brynley’s work will serve as a vital archive of the UK’s 2020s art scene.
